Titus 2:1-8
1: But as for you, speak the things which are fitting for sound doctrine.
6: Likewise urge the young men to be sensible;
2: Older men are to be temperate, dignified, sensible, sound in faith, in love, in perseverance.
3: Older women likewise are to be reverent in their behavior, not malicious gossips nor enslaved to much wine, teaching what is good,
3: Older women likewise are to be reverent in their behavior, not malicious gossips nor enslaved to much wine, teaching what is good,
4: so that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children,
5: to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands, so that the word of God will not be dishonored.
6: Likewise urge the young men to be sensible;
7: in all things show yourself to be an example of good deeds, with purity in doctrine, dignified,
8: sound in speech which is beyond reproach, so that the opponent will be put to shame, having nothing bad to say about us.
Paul told Titus not to be like the ones he just described, but to speak what is fitting for sound doctrine. He then instructed him on the proper attitude and behavior of the people.
Older men are to be temperate, dignified, sensible, sound in faith, love, and perseverance. Older women also are to be reverent, not gossips or drunks but teaching what is good—encouraging the young women in their family relationships and in the management of their households. Being subject to their own husbands so as not to dishonor God’s word.
Paul appeared to prefer that the older women would encourage the young women, rather than for Titus to address them directly. The older being in a position to lead by example, as well as through relationship and practical instruction.
The younger men are to be sensible, and Titus himself was to be an example in deeds, doctrine, and speech so anyone who opposed him will be put to shame—not able to say anything bad about him. Paul stressed the importance of sound doctrine to keep everyone on track with the ways of the Lord.
Sound doctrine was not what Paul dictated, but the revelation of the gospel of Jesus Christ. This gospel is what gives faith for a person to experience salvation, which in turn affects their outward behavior. It is through a relationship with Christ, receiving His love and nurturing the growth of it within our own lives, that we truly become reflections of Him and His witnesses in the earth.
When a person listens to false doctrine—corrupting words of those with an impure heart, a heart which has not received the gospel and salvation of Jesus Christ—then they themselves may become corrupted through the deception of those words. As Titus preached, exhorted, and reproved with sound doctrine he would bring life to the Cretans.
