1 John 2:25-29
25: This is the promise which He Himself made to us: eternal life.
26: These things I have written to you concerning those who are trying to deceive you.
27: As for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in Him.
28: Now, little children, abide in Him, so that when He appears, we may have confidence and not shrink away from Him in shame at His coming.
29: If you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone also who practices righteousness is born of Him.

Eternal life is the promise to all who believe in the Son (John 3:15). It is so much more than living forever, it is life itself and all that the presence of the Father brings--life, light, liberty, truth, righteousness, and so on. It is freedom from all the death and darkness that comes from opposing God and His salvation offered through His Son, Jesus Christ.
John said he wrote these things to help them concerning those trying to deceive them. He encouraged them, saying they had the anointing of the Holy Spirit within them. He is the Spirit of Truth who teaches us (John 14:17, 25). He bears witness to the truth in our hearts so we can discern and recognize evil when it is presented to us. By knowing the truth, error is quickly recognized as such, and we can refuse to accept that which would deceive us.
Deception is simply accepting a lie as truth. The problem is, you don't know when you're believing a lie--you think that lie is truth. The more we know the truth, the more we will remain in it, and not fall prey to lies and error. Seek the truth, ask Him to show you the truth, to lead and guide you in all truth--He will.
John encouraged his readers to remain in the Lord, to continue to abide in Him and not be led astray. By the Spirit of God, we can remain in Him. We do not have to be deceived. As we remain in Him, we will not be ashamed at His coming. We will have confidence because we abide in Him and He in us. When we abide in Him, we will keep His Word and remain in the Light and Love of God. If you know that He is righteous, then you know that everyone who practices righteousness is born of Him. As Jesus said, you will know them by their fruits (Matthew 7:15-20).
