1 Peter 1:10-16

10: As to this salvation, the prophets who prophesied of the grace that would come to you made careful searches and inquiries,
11: seeking to know what person or time the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating as He predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow.
12: It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves, but you, in these things which now have been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven—things into which angels long to look.

13: Therefore, prepare your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
14: As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance,
15: but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior;
16: because it is written, “YOU SHALL BE HOLY, FOR I AM HOLY.”

Peter, having started the letter immediately addressing the inheritance and the salvation provided to believers through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, and how believers obtain this salvation through the trying of their faith. He spoke further about this salvation which the prophets carefully searched out and inquired about.

The prophets of old prophesied of the salvation which became available through Jesus Christ—to them it was the grace to come—and they searched out what the Spirit of Christ within them was revealing to them about the Lord’s suffering, resurrection, and glory to come. They knew that the Messiah would come and suffer, yet glory would follow and salvation to man would result. They searched to find out who He would be and when He would come.

The prophets discovered that these things were not for their generations, but for a future time. They had a part to play in it of course, but the fullness of Christ and His salvation would come after their time. Peter said they found that, “They were not serving themselves, but you.”

The believers in Peter’s day were served, not just by the prophets of old, but also by those who preached the Gospel to them. The Holy Spirit brought it all together—what was preached and prophesied throughout the ages, down to the coming of Christ and His Gospel. The angels longed to look at these things—God in the flesh, coming to die for the sin of mankind, His glorious resurrection, and believers coming into an inheritance in Christ through faith.

Peter told them because of this great, marvelous salvation, they should prepare their minds, keep sober in spirit, and fix their hope completely on the grace to come to them at the revelation of Jesus Christ, which is yet to come. He told them to stay pure, keeping away from their former lusts, and to be holy in all their behavior. He quoted the Lord in Leviticus 11:44, “Be holy for I am holy.” There is more to the story. It is not finished yet. He will come again, and His reward is with Him (Revelation 22:12).
