2 Peter 3:1-9

1: This is now, beloved, the second letter I am writing to you in which I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder,
2: that you should remember the words spoken beforehand by the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior spoken by your apostles.

3: Know this first of all, that in the last days mockers will come with their mocking, following after their own lusts,
4: and saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all continues just as it was from the beginning of creation.”
5: For when they maintain this, it escapes their notice that by the word of God the heavens existed long ago and the earth was formed out of water and by water,
6: through which the world at that time was destroyed, being flooded with water.
7: But by His word the present heavens and earth are being reserved for fire, kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.

8: But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day.
9: The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.

Peter told his readers why he was writing this second letter—to stir up their sincere minds by way of reminder. He said they should remember the words of the Old Testament prophets and the commandment of the Lord spoken by the apostles. These spoken words, now written, serve to remind us of the words and commands of God. Again, Peter knew his time on earth was coming to an end, so he wanted to leave them with something they could reference after he was gone (2 Peter 1:13-15).

First, he said for them to know that mockers will come in the last days. They will be following their own lusts. They will mock those who believe in the promise of Christ’s return to earth. They’ll say that everything will just keep on going as it always has from the beginning—no bodily return of the Lord, no judgement etc. and will ridicule those who believe in His coming.

Peter said they will have forgotten the creation by the Word of God, and the history of the heavens and earth itself. They have forgotten the flood. Peter explained that by God's Word—this same Word—the present heavens and earth are being kept, yet reserved for fire for the day of judgement of the ungodly.

Those who mock the coming of the Lord have forgotten, or never paid attention to, the history of the heavens and the very earth they live on. They’ve neglected this knowledge of the Word of God so are unaware of, and don’t believe, the promise of what’s to come.

Peter also said to be sure and know that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years and a thousand years like one day. Time is of no effect on Him. He stands outside its realm. He is not slow like we think of slow—He’s not late or neglectful in doing what He’s promised. Rather He is patient because He wants to give as many people as possible time to repent.
