1 Corinthians 6:14-20
14: Now God has not only raised the Lord, but will also raise us up through His power.
15: Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take away the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? May it never be!
16: Or do you not know that the one who joins himself to a prostitute is one body with her? For He says, “THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH.”
17: But the one who joins himself to the Lord is one spirit with Him.
18: Flee immorality. Every other sin that a man commits is outside the body, but the immoral man sins against his own body.
19: Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?
20: For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.
Our bodies are perishing, but one day the believer’s body will be raised up through the power of God, like Jesus was. Paul told the Corinthians that their bodies were members of Christ. All believers are a part of His body, so he asked whether they should take a part of Christ’s body and make it a prostitute. Absolutely not!
Paul quoted Genesis 2:24—the two shall become one flesh—to explain that whoever joins with a prostitute becomes one with her. Sexual sins, ungodly lusts, and passions of the flesh in a believer is like prostituting Christ Himself. Which is unthinkable. It is also a sin against your own body, as well as the body of Christ. So what to do? Flee immorality! Get away from it.
Paul explained that the Christian's body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in him/her. When you join to the Lord you are one spirit with Him. You’ve been bought and paid for, so glorify God in your body. To enjoy the privileges, we’ve obtained through Jesus’ sacrifice for our sins—rescued from the kingdom of darkness, the honor of becoming one of His own, part of His body, His temple, filled with His Spirit, forgiven, pardoned, and one day resurrected and glorified—we must keep ourselves free from the corrupting tendencies of the flesh. A small price to pay in the big picture.
