Hebrews 10:1-7

1: For the Law, since it has only a shadow of the good things to come and not the very form of things, can never, by the same sacrifices which they offer continually year by year, make perfect those who draw near.
2: Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, because the worshipers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have had consciousness of sins?
3: But in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins year by year.
4: For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

5: Therefore, when He comes into the world, He says, “SACRIFICE AND OFFERING YOU HAVE NOT DESIRED, BUT A BODY YOU HAVE PREPARED FOR ME;
6: IN WHOLE BURNT OFFERINGS AND sacrifices FOR SIN YOU HAVE TAKEN NO PLEASURE.
7: “THEN I SAID, ‘BEHOLD, I HAVE COME (IN THE SCROLL OF THE BOOK IT IS WRITTEN OF ME) TO DO YOUR WILL, O GOD.’”

The fact that animal sacrifices had to be made continually year after year for the people—the worshipers of God under the Law—was proof that these sacrifices did not perfect the people. It didn’t cleanse their consciences from sin. Every year on the Day of Atonement (as well as during the daily sacrifices) there was a reminder of the sinfulness of man—the hold of sin over man—and man’s inability to conquer sin and truly please God from the heart.

The blood of bulls and goats cannot take away sin. It’s impossible. Which is why there was a constant reminder of sin during these sacrifices. More than cleansing man from sin, they were a reminder of man’s need to be cleansed from sin (Romans 3:20). Everything about the Law and the Levitical priesthood pointed to the fact that man was in need of a Savior to rescue us from the grips of the enemy and redeem us back to God our Creator.

Paul quoted Psalm 40:6-8 which is a psalm of David where he prophetically spoke of Christ. God did not desire animal sacrifices and offerings from Jesus but prepared a body for Him. The Father’s plan was for Jesus to come and offer His own body as a sacrifice for the sin of all mankind. The Law of God was in His heart (Psalm 40:8) and He fulfilled it in the body.

In Psalm 40:6 it also says, “My ears You have opened,” meaning His ears were pierced by the Father which symbolized a Master/Slave relationship. Jesus totally submitted to the Father’s will as a slave to His Master, even to the point of death (Matthew 26:39).

The sacrifices which only temporarily covered man’s sins were not pleasing to God. The obedience of the people to follow His commands were pleasing, but God wanted the hearts of man cleansed, and for the power of sin over man to be broken once and for all. Jesus came to fulfill this plan. It was prophesied ahead of time—written of Him in the Scripture—and He fulfilled every prophecy of the Christ (John 5:39).
