Hebrews 7:23-28

23: The former priests, on the one hand, existed in greater numbers because they were prevented by death from continuing,
24: but Jesus, on the other hand, because He continues forever, holds His priesthood permanently.
25: Therefore He is able also to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.

26: For it was fitting for us to have such a high priest, holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners and exalted above the heavens;
27: who does not need daily, like those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the sins of the people, because this He did once for all when He offered up Himself.
28: For the Law appoints men as high priests who are weak, but the word of the oath, which came after the Law, appoints a Son, made perfect forever.

Paul continued to point out differences between the Levitical priesthood and Jesus’ priesthood, and why Christ’s is much better. The former priests died, and their priesthood ended with their death, so there had to be more priests appointed to take their place. Yet Jesus’ priestly ministry continued after His death and resurrection, and He always lives to make intercession for us.

Through Jesus we can draw near to God, and through His permanent priesthood He is able to save us forever. He is a high priest who is holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. The Levitical priests had to offer sacrifices daily, for their own sins first then the peoples, but Jesus doesn’t need to do that for He was without sin. His sacrifice was once and for all.

Jesus came and lived among us, tempted like us in every way (Hebrews 4:1), yet He didn’t sin, so He was able to offer Himself up for us to pay the price for our sin which atones for all of mankind, restoring those who believe back into fellowship with God the Father. He didn’t need to repeat His sacrifice as the other priests did, being sinful men themselves. His pure blood paid the price for it all.

The Law could only appoint weak men as high priests, but the word of the oath—the Word of God that Jesus is a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek (Psalm 110:4, Hebrews 7:21)—which came after the Law, appointed Jesus, the Son of God. He was made perfect forever through His obedience to the Father and sufferings for us (Hebrews 2:10, 5:8-9). Jesus is by far a superior priest, and His priesthood, being powerful, perfect, and eternal, is far superior as well.
