Hebrews 2:1-4

1: For this reason we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away from it.
2: For if the word spoken through angels proved unalterable, and every transgression and disobedience received a just penalty,
3: how will we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? After it was at the first spoken through the Lord, it was confirmed to us by those who heard,
4: God also testifying with them, both by signs and wonders and by various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit according to His own will.

Paul said that because the Son of God—Christ—is exalted far above the angels and is, in fact, God in the flesh, we must pay closer attention to what we’ve heard—to what God has spoken through Him (Hebrews 1:2)—so we don’t slip away from what He’s said.

The Jews knew the importance of knowing and understanding the commandments of God. Those commandments given to Moses on Mt. Sinai were spoken by angels and ordained through them (Galatians 3:19, Acts 7:53, Deuteronomy 33:2). Since what was spoken through them was so highly valued, how much more important is it then for us to pay attention to what the Lord Himself has spoken to us?

If the commandments broken under Old Testament Law were unalterable and transgressions were punished, how will we escape if we neglect or reject the great salvation the Lord purchased for us with His own blood? This gospel of Christ was not to be neglected or ignored. It is not something to be simply added on to Old Testament Scripture with Jesus’ message being treated on the same level as the Law given to Moses—as important as that was at the time. It was the fulfillment of Scripture and superseded it. It is still important for us to know and understand the Old Testament, but we must give the gospel of Christ and the New Testament its rightful place as the new covenant between God and man.

The message the Lord spoke was confirmed by those who heard Him (Luke 1:14) with God the Father also testifying to it through signs, wonders, miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit. We see many miraculous works being done throughout the ministry of Christ in the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. God also worked miracles through the apostles as we read in the book of Acts, and through believers in the gifts of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 12). The gospel of Christ, and the new covenant He ushered in, is far better and we must pay attention to it.
