Hebrews 5:11-14
11: Concerning him we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing.
12: For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you the elementary principles of the oracles of God, and you have come to need milk and not solid food.
13: For everyone who partakes only of milk is not accustomed to the word of righteousness, for he is an infant.
14: But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil.
Paul had much to say about Melchizedek, but said it was hard to explain because they had become “dull of hearing.” He returned to the subject of Melchizedek in Hebrews 6:20, but first he addressed the topic of their dull hearing, stunted Christian growth, and its consequences.
He said they should be teachers themselves by this point but instead they needed to be taught again the elementary principles of the oracles of God. They’d come to need milk and not solid food. God never intended for His people to stay in a place of infancy and dependency upon His apostles or anyone else. He intends for those who come to believe in Jesus to grow and learn, so they will be able to instruct others themselves. Of course, the body of Christ is to love and support one another. We all need each other. But we must come to maturity to function in the body as we are meant to.
God wants us to become “accustomed to the word of righteousness.” If we simply sit back and allow others to spoon feed us His Word without taking time to feed ourselves and receive the stronger meat of the Word, we’ll remain spiritually dependent. We will not be an asset to the Kingdom of God—not a profitable son or daughter—but one who receives the resources of heaven ourselves without doing our part to build His kingdom.
Solid food if for those who are mature, who need meat because they practice Christianity as it is meant to be. Their senses are trained to discern good and evil as a result. Make the determination to grow and mature in Christ seeking the meat of His Word.
