Romans 1:8-17

8: First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, because your faith is being proclaimed throughout the whole world.
9: For God, whom I serve in my spirit in the preaching of the gospel of His Son, is my witness as to how unceasingly I make mention of you,
10: always in my prayers making request, if perhaps now at last by the will of God I may succeed in coming to you.
11: For I long to see you so that I may impart some spiritual gift to you, that you may be established;
12: that is, that I may be encouraged together with you while among you, each of us by the other’s faith, both yours and mine.
13: I do not want you to be unaware, brethren, that often I have planned to come to you (and have been prevented so far) so that I may obtain some fruit among you also, even as among the rest of the Gentiles.
14: I am under obligation both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to the wise and to the foolish.
15: So, for my part, I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome.

16: For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
17: For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “BUT THE RIGHTEOUS man SHALL LIVE BY FAITH.”

***

Paul’s eagerness to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ was evident. He said he was obligated to preach it yet was not ashamed of it. His joy in the gospel was obvious, seen by his statement that they would be encouraged by each other’s faith when he visited. He boldly said that the gospel is the power of God for salvation, and he addressed the fact that salvation was no longer just for the Jews, but for the Gentiles as well, because it was now by faith. He pointed to Old Testament Scripture which declares that the righteous would live by faith. This righteousness by faith had been revealed in the gospel of Jesus Christ.

To fully appreciate this portion of Scripture, it's worth making sure one has a proper understanding of the definitions of the following words:

Gospel: “The history of the birth, life, actions, death, resurrection, ascension and doctrines of Jesus Christ; or a revelation of the grace of God to fallen man through a mediator, including the character, actions, and doctrines of Christ, with the whole scheme of salvation, as revealed by Christ and his apostles...”1

Gentile: Gentile was most often used to refer to a non-Jewish person, especially one who did not worship the true God.

Righteous: “Just; accordant to the divine law. Applied to persons, it denotes one who is holy in heart, and observant of the divine commands in practice;…”1

Salvation: “…the redemption of man from the bondage of sin and liability to eternal death, and the conferring on him everlasting happiness...”1
