Romans 5:6-11
6: For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.
7: For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die.
8: But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
9: Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him.
10: For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.
11: And not only this, but we also exult in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.
Paul further explained the love of God which has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who was given to us as a result of Jesus’ finished work and our faith in Him. When we needed Him the most, due to our inability to live a righteous life, Jesus came and died for the sin of all mankind. He didn’t come to die for good people, but sinners. Those helpless to save themselves—which is every person.
What Jesus did was a great demonstration of the love of God toward mankind. The shedding of Jesus’ blood in His death, justifies those who believe, which saves us from the wrath of God. Paul furthered the thought by saying if Jesus’ death was able to reconcile us to God while we were still sinners, how much more will His resurrected life save us now that we’re reconciled to God? Once again, we celebrate that we are now reconciled to God through Jesus Christ.
As long as we try to justify ourselves on our own merit, we disqualify ourselves from the righteousness of God, which comes through grace and faith. This was exactly what Jesus tried to get the Jewish leaders who opposed Him to understand, but they couldn’t see that they were sinners in need of God’s grace. They were arrogant in their thinking. God’s love reveals truth, not to condemn, but to save. If we agree with Him, are thankful for His sacrifice, and believe in Him acknowledging Him as Lord, we will be made righteous and can rejoice in our reconciliation with God.
