Romans 4:1-8

1: What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, has found?
2: For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God.
3: For what does the Scripture say? “ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS CREDITED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS.”
4: Now to the one who works, his wage is not credited as a favor, but as what is due.
5: But to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness,
6: just as David also speaks of the blessing on the man to whom God credits righteousness apart from works:
7: “BLESSED ARE THOSE WHOSE LAWLESS DEEDS HAVE BEEN FORGIVEN, AND WHOSE SINS HAVE BEEN COVERED.
8: “BLESSED IS THE MAN WHOSE SIN THE LORD WILL NOT TAKE INTO ACCOUNT.”

Paul looked to Abraham—the father of the Jews—to validate what he had been saying about righteousness being by faith, and not earned through works. The Scripture says that even Abraham was made righteous because he believed God (Genesis 15:6). Paul explained that if man were able to earn righteousness by works, then he would have. Of course, we’ve seen that that’s not the case because everyone sins. Yet the one who believes in the Lord who justifies the ungodly, realizing he’s receiving a gift, his faith is credited to him as righteousness. Paul then quoted Psalm 32:1-2 where David also spoke of the one to whom God blesses with righteousness without having earned it.

Paul used Old Testament Scripture about both Abraham and David, which the Jews were very familiar with, to show that righteousness by faith was not a new concept. It was God’s way all along. It’s a gift. It’s not earned. We can’t earn it. No one could. Jesus was the only one who could, and He did. He now freely offers the gift of righteousness to all who believe in Him.
