Romans 3:9-18

9: What then? Are we better than they? Not at all; for we have already charged that both Jews and Greeks are all under sin;
10: as it is written, “THERE IS NONE RIGHTEOUS, NOT EVEN ONE;
11: THERE IS NONE WHO UNDERSTANDS, THERE IS NONE WHO SEEKS FOR GOD;
12: ALL HAVE TURNED ASIDE, TOGETHER THEY HAVE BECOME USELESS; THERE IS NONE WHO DOES GOOD, THERE IS NOT EVEN ONE.”
13: THEIR THROAT IS AN OPEN GRAVE, WITH THEIR TONGUES THEY KEEP DECEIVING, THE POISON OF ASPS IS UNDER THEIR LIPS;
14: WHOSE MOUTH IS FULL OF CURSING AND BITTERNESS;
15: THEIR FEET ARE SWIFT TO SHED BLOOD,
16: DESTRUCTION AND MISERY ARE IN THEIR PATHS,
17: AND THE PATH OF PEACE THEY HAVE NOT KNOWN.
18:THERE IS NO FEAR OF GOD BEFORE THEIR EYES.”

Paul asked, since the Jews had been entrusted with the oracles of God, if they were in a better condition than others to be justified by God. The answer was no. Paul had already shown that all are under sin, both Jew and Greek--the Jews by transgressing the written Law, and the Gentiles by transgressing the law of nature (as seen in day 3). Paul then quoted several Scriptures, mostly from the Psalms of David and one from Isaiah, which showed that this was not a new thought. Even Old Testament Scripture backed this up—that all had sinned, even the Jew.

The verses he quoted speak of the wicked, foolish, ungodly, and evil men. Yet also, all men, including those who turn away from God to do evil. The Lord looks to see if any understand. If any seek after Him or do good, but there’s not one. All had turned aside and become corrupt, (and still do without Him).

Paul continued to lay the foundation for righteousness by faith in Jesus Christ. It’s important to thoroughly understand that no one can live a good enough life on their own to obtain a position of righteousness with God. Human nature may tend to think we have to earn it by good works, or inherit it from our ancestors, but God is making this personal in the gospel of His Son Jesus, and bear with it, the new is much better than the old.

Scriptures quoted: Psalm 14:1-3; Psalm 5:9, Psalm 140:3, Psalm 10:7, Isaiah 59:7; Psalm 36:1
